World Cup and its impact on South Africa

2010 World Cup was the 19th FIFA World Cup. It took place in South Africa from 11June-11July 2010. The matches were played at ten stadium;Soccer City, Cape Town Stadium, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Ellis Park Stadium, Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Peter Mokaba Stadium, Mbombela Stadium, Free State Stadium and Royal Bafokeng Stadium in nine cities around the country, the final were played at Soccer City stadium in South Africa's largest city,Johannesburg.

I personally feels that world cup has its advantages and disadvantages.

This year World Cup has not only unified South Africa but it has also benefited the nation and the country’s tourism industry. South Africa investment in the World Cup has led to major infrastructure to support and grow local communities. Furthermore, World Cup has allowed approximately 3, 600,000 additional jobs for local economies over the tournament period and with that a boost in tourism infrastructure results in improved experiences for the visitors.

Besides that, South Africans have significantly benefited from these developments. They receive increased training and up-skilling in hospitality and tourism sectors to cope with the World Cup arrivals, which resulted  more skilled people and jobs in tourism.

New urban recreational areas, multi-disciplinary sports facilities and youth football development programs were built or renovated for this year World Cup. These help the disadvantaged communities by providing them job opportunities in the construction of infrastructure and telecoms networks across the country. In addition, the four revamped and six new world-class, multi-purpose stadiums will continue to stimulate economies and provide more jobs in years to come.

The overall economic impact of the World Cup about 62 percent of the total spending is on infrastructure and preparations. The government’s overall investment in infrastructure including roads, airport development and passenger rail.

However, there are social effects during the event. Reports of thefts against visitors to the country for the World Cup. Tourists from China, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Japan and Colombia had become victims of crime. Besides that, there were some media groups experienced complications in regards to schedule of sporting events, advertising, or broadcasting, as FIFA attempted to maximise control of media rights during the Cup. Furthermore, preparation for World Cup housing project in Cape town resulting in removing 20000 residents from the Joe Slovo Informal Settlement and build rental flats and bond-houses in its place in time for the 2010 World Cup.

In conclusion, 2010 World Cup has its negative and postive on South Africa. Negative impacts include social effects and resettlement which causes the eviction of poor families to make way for 2010 World Cup. Whereas, the positive impact include boosting of the economy, additional jobs for the locals, higher standard of living due to major infrastructure and skills upgrading for the local as well.

Dr Goh Keng Swee(1918-2010)

Thousand of people from all sections of Singapore society braved the heat and long queues at parliment house to bid their last farewell to one of Singapore's founding fathers, Dr Goh Keng Swee, 91.

Dr Goh Keng Swee , a great thinker and visionary ,economic architect of Singapore. He worked tirelessly towards building some part of the nation that is the Singapore we know today.
A selfless , humble man who gave of himself to his family and nation .

He was given the toughest job in the government : Ministry of Finance. Dr Goh discovered that the government was almost broke and expected a budget deficit of $14million. He immediately introduced drastic measures to cut spending.

He helped create the Monetary Authority of Singapore where he laid out the policies that produce a stable Singapore dollar and preserved the purchasing power of Singaporeans.

To develop a defense capability and safeguard Singapore in a dangerous world . Dr Goh took on a heavy responsibility as our first defense minister and built up the Singapore Armed Forces(SAF) from scratch .

When he was given the job in the Ministry of Education, he introduced major re-forms, leaving his imprint on a fundamentally changed education system.

He promoted the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Singapre Zoological Garden , the Jurong Birdpark, Sentosa, the Chinese Garden and the Japanese Garden for the Singaporeans to have a feel for beauty and the arts.

His changed in education system allow us to complete our secondary education, masters both English and mother tongue. His decision on rapid industrialisation, attracting investments from multinational corporation to create jobs and exports helped the growth of Singapore economy.  He helped to steer our nation through difficult times.  I personally feels that without him , much of Singapore wouldn't exist and Singapore is forever indebted to Dr Goh Keng Swee.

Social Network : Facebook

Facebook is now the latest social media. It is a platform where teenagers , elderly and even teachers use it as a common communication tool. Individuals who have an account in Facebook are now using more of their time to socialize with other people amidst the distance and lack of time. And even if a community like Facebook serves numerous advantages, it also proves to have certain disadvantages as well.

From the article of social networking on Facebook, it has better informed us about the importance of privacy as well as the risk associated with it.

Facebook allows us to post messages so that your close friends locally and overseas know what you are performing and where exactly you are . Therfore , through such posting of messages , images and videos , we can keep in touch with our loved ones everytime . Besides that it also allow us to search for old and new friends.

However, due to the lack of privacy , our personal information like address and email account can be leaked out to unwanted friends or users without knowing.
Furthemore, stalking and password stealing is possible on Facebook.

Facebook is not bad afterall as there are now series of improvements in the system just to make up with the shortcomings. All Facebook users should be more aware and responsible when they disclose their own information. They can make use of the privacy settings to prevent unwanted friends or users to view their account, photos and personal information.

Marina Bay Sand Vs Resort World Sentosa

The auspicious 3.18pm marks the opening ceremony of the Marina Bay Sand(MBS) on Tuesday, April 27.
It was well worth the wait for the MBS opening after much anticipation .

In the first 24hours operation, more than 36,000 visitors thronged Marina Bay Sands.

In contrast, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) saw 35,000 visitors to its casino alone on the first two days of operation after it opened on Feb 14.

MBS opened its first phase with 963 hotel rooms, 35 retail shops, some restaurants, the Sands Expo and Convention Center, the event plaza and the casino.

I believed MBS is successful as it has attracted more than 36,000 visitors in one day.
Furthermore, MBS is located in the town area therefore it is easy accessible for the visitors & businessman as compare to RWS  .

Being situated in the most strategic location, MBS has the full spectacular night view of Singapore. Example; Singapore Flyer , Marina Barrage , Singapore Merlion & the Esplanade etc . Besides the night view of Singapore, the Sands SkyPark is an awe-inspiring engineering wonder. It is an absolute paradise in the sky , Sands SkyPark features idyllic landscaped garden that are home to the floras .

On contrary, RWS has the view of the attractions located within it.
Example; the Universal Studio,Festive walk, Maritime Xperiential Museum & etc.

Even though both MBS &RWS are in the entertainment industry, I believed that MBS would be more competitive than RWS.  As MBS provide more facilities and choices for the businessmen to fully utilise & choose.
For example The Sands Expo and Convention Center . It handle any event, such as meetings, trade events and conventions.

MBS & RWS has its negative & positive effect on Singapore's economy.
The Intergrated Resorts(IR) has made Singapore as one of the tourist destination .  Therefore, the more the tourist spend in Singapore , it helps to boost Singapore economy . Besides that , IRs help to attract more foreign investors into Singapore to invest . Hence, resulting in higher standard of living in Singapore. In addition , IRs does not only attracts more tourist but it also increases the number of jobs available for the Singaporeans.

IR do help to boost Singapore economy however it has its negative effect as well .
The Asian people see gaming as a form of entertainment and it is also a chinese passion for gambling. When Singaporeans get too addicted to gambling it can results to the increase of loanshark & bankruptcy etc.
In my opinion, I felt that Singapore government should take actions such as having campaigns to create awareness, educate the public and increase the entrance fees for the Singaporeans. As I believed the main purpose of the IRs are to attract more tourist to boost the economy.

In conclusion, I felt that MBS & RWS has its own unique attractions to attract and retain its customer.
Furthermore , both MBS & RWS are great "helpers" as they helped to boost and drive Singapore's tourism economy . However, it will also affect our economy as there will be a rise in family/social problems.
